Study Programmes
The Institute for Jewish Studies offers a Bachelor's and Master's program that provides in-depth insights into Jewish intellectual and cultural history. Students acquire comprehensive knowledge of the fundamental texts and main currents of Judaism – from antiquity to the present – and flexibly design their course of study according to personal interests and focus areas.
The Bachelor's program focuses on intensive academic training in Hebrew, taking into account all the important historical stages of the development of the language. At the same time, students receive a thorough introduction to the methods and approaches that are important for the study of Jewish tradition.
The Master's program offers students the opportunity to deepen their knowledge of these fundamentals and to engage intensively with texts in the original language, historical contexts and theoretical issues. Particular emphasis is placed on Jewish moral literature, mysticism and philosophy, supplemented by approaches from linguistics and cultural studies.
In both programs, students have the opportunity to get to know the methods and working methods of Jewish Studies as part of research projects. In addition, participation in regularly held conferences and workshops offers the opportunity to engage in conversation with renowned experts from Germany and abroad and to learn about current developments in research.
A stay abroad is strongly recommended during both the bachelor's and master's programs. It enables you to gain international perspectives on your studies and to gain intercultural experience. The institute is happy to advise students on planning and implementing such a stay.
Studying Jewish Studies not only imparts knowledge about Judaism. It also promotes analytical skills, linguistic expertise and interdisciplinary thinking – skills that are not only of central importance in academia, but also in the fields of education and culture.
