Interdisciplinary WorkshopAlevism through Emotions: Interdisciplinary Perspectives on Emotions in Alevi TraditionsWhen: 25-26 September 2025, Where: Institute for Alevi Theology
12. September 2025
The role of emotions in religion has increasingly gained scholarly attention in recent years. Emotions shape individual experiences as well as collective practices; they contribute to meaning-making, identity formation, and the transmission of values and norms, all while fostering social cohesion within religious communities.
Although research on Alevism has expanded significantly over the past decades, emotions have rarely been placed at the centre of Alevi Studies. Yet the socio-religious organisation of Alevi communities, their rich poetic tradition, ritual practices, and the central role of music all point to a tradition deeply embedded with emotional expressions and codes.
This workshop explores these multifaceted emotional expressions, codifications, and expectations from an interdisciplinary perspective. By bringing together insights from religious studies, theology, anthropology, sociology, literary studies, and history, it highlights emotions as a key dimension of Alevi teachings, social structures, and practices in both historical and contemporary contexts.
The workshop will be held in hybrid format, with participants warmly invited to join the workshop online. Please register by 23 September via email: alevitische-theologie@uni-hamburg.de( alevitische-theologie"AT"uni-hamburg.de)
