Medieval Hebrew Styles in the Classical and Pre-Classical Periods
Aharon Maman (Hebrew University of Jerusalem)
This talk will describe the major Hebrew styles established during the eleventh and twelfth century CE in the translation of Judeo-Arabic scientific works. Until then, Hebrew mainly dealt with topics related to Halakha (Jewish law) and Aggada (prophecy, history, wisdom Midrash and poetry), but not sciences. The first attempts to write on Jewish theology were in Arabic. Yet for the benefit of Jews who lived outside Arab lands, Hebrew translations were necessary. In the mid-eleventh century, Tobias Ben Moshe the Karaite and his followers established an Arabized Hebrew style in their translations of theological and other Karaite matters, made for the Byzantine community. About a century later, Judah Ibn Tibbon and subsequent scholars translated Judeo-Arabic works for the sake of Provençal and other European communities, in a style that would became known as "Tibbonide Hebrew". These two major styles will be outlined in general terms and will be placed in a historical framework.
