The first international workshop “Varieties of Musar: Sociological, Historical, and Literary Perspectives” will focus on the rich varieties of musar-literature and explore some of the difficulties surrounding the definition, function, and reception of this textual corpus.

The Emmy Noether Research Group “Jewish Moralistic Writings (Musar) of the Early Modern Period: 1600-1800” kindly invites you to the first international workshop “Varieties of Musar: Sociological, Historical, and Literary Perspectives.” The workshop will focus on the rich varieties of musar-literature and explore some of the difficulties surrounding the definition, function, and reception of this textual corpus. The discussion shall offer an opportunity to reconsider some of the prevalent assumptions regarding the social and historical significance of musarand to engage the complexity of its literary expressions.
