In a Nutshell
In the context of the HEPMASITE project, I am exploring how Aristotelian psychology was studied in Hebrew philosophical manuscripts. For this purpose, I am examining three key moments of engagement with Aristotelian psychology as found in manuscripts: Samuel ben Judah of Marseilles’s notes for his translation of Alexander of Aphrodisias’s De anima; an anonymous translation of a portion of Averroes’s Middle Commentary on Aristotle’s De anima; and Caleb Afendopolo’s reactive notes on several works on Aristotelian psychology found in a manuscript from his library (MS Kaufmann A 285). Through this manuscript-based approach, I hope to deepen our understanding of philosophical activity around psychological discussions in Hebrew.
