PESHAT
Officina Philosophica Hebraica I
April 5th and 6th 2016, the DFG funded long-term project “PESHAT in Context” (www.peshat.org), directed by Prof. Dr. Prof. h.c. Giuseppe Veltri and Dr. Reimund Leicht, hosted its first triennial conference at the Institute of Jewish Philosophy and Religion at Hamburg University:
The Tibbonian Translation Tradition and the Formation of Medieval Hebrew Philosophical and Scientific Terminology
Scholars researching Medieval Hebrew translation practices discussed current research issues and combined those with recent findings in PESHAT in order to discuss them in an interdisciplinary scientific context. Researchers in fields of history of Jewish thought, Jewish philosophy, Arabic languages and Muslim philosophy, Latin studies, or general history of terminology were invited to contribute to the Officina Philosophica Hebraica.
The intended four volumes will present a synthesis of current research into the development of Hebrew philosophical and scientific terminology, each focused on a specific period of time. They will present the work of the team and of the scientific community as a whole on the study of Hebrew terminology and provide a tool (handbook) intended to support future research into Hebrew philosophical and scientific literature.
You will find the programme of the First OPH here.
SFORNO
Conference
There will be a conference soon.
First Symposium: Lost & Found in Translation - Obadiah Sforno and his World
Between Two Worlds: The tractate “Or ´Ammim” (Light of the Nations) of the Last Jewish Scholastic Philosopher Obadiah Sforno in its Hebrew and Latin Versions is a project funded by the DFG. The project is supervised by Prof. Dr. Prof. h.c. Giuseppe Veltri. and Prof. Dr. Saverio Campanini (University of Bologna) who are joined by two Research Associates, Giada Coppola and Florian Dunklau.
The philosopher-theologian, Obadiah Sforno, wrote a scholastic work entitled Or ‘Ammim (Light of the Nations). Sforno translated his own work into Latin, with the title Lumen Gentium, in order to make it accessible to a Christian Humanist readership. His book represents a distinguished Summa of philosophical and scientific concepts flourishing in the Jewish, Scholastic and Islamic traditions of the Middle Ages and Renaissance. The Light of the Nations is an outstanding testament to the intercultural exchange between Christian and Jewish scholars of Renaissance Italian Aristotelianism.
The first symposium, Lost & Found in Translation - Obadiah Sforno and his world, will investigate particular aspects of Sforno’s thought as a self-translator, his Exegesis and his environment, and will also consider the relationship between Sforno and his contemporaries.
